Vaadiyon ki shehjaadi – Kashmir..!

Why Kashmir?

“Gar firdaus bar-rue  zamin ast, hami asto, hamin asto, hamin asto” - Read this poem when I was in school and I always used to think what is so special about Kashmir that Emperor Jehangir quoted these lines of Amir Khusro to describe the place.  Reasons could be anything but fact check kept reminding me ‘you still need to find out an answer’.

It’s about 11PM on the 6th day of Dec’20. As I lie down on bed thinking 1st weekend of the last month of 2020 is ending, my eyes were gaze locked seeing the ceiling fan trying so hard to move out of its shackle but failing to do so with each rotation. Something within me laughed and said ‘what else have you done this year?’. Realizing that COVID had already tumbled upon all plans through the year, and the situations overall were already too much on nerves, the inner self within me stumbled on the earlier laughter and said there couldn’t be a better time to step outside the four walls, beat the fear of pandemic and throw yourself to the lap of nature. I immediately realized it was actually wanderlust within me thriving badly to step outside and get an answer to the old age query of ‘Why Kashmir is called ‘Jannat’ on earth.

The Planning

Without any further delay I started checking tickets/hotels etc. I found ‘Discover Gulmarg Adventures’ as an agency in Gulmarg with some nice reviews on travel blog portals. With least hassles I got the bookings confirmation from 25th Dec ‘20 to 3rd Jan ‘21 to explore answer of my query.

March to the Arch

Dec 25th – As I finish snacks offered in the flight, glimpse of snowcapped mountain peaks starts appearing and trust me it was closest to thought of being on Cloud 9. As Srinagar airport also serves as a defense airport, photography is prohibited while descending and around the airport, else I would have clicked to drain the battery. I kept this day as leisure to give ourselves a day for acclimatization as being in Mumbai we usually don’t see weather with temperature below 25°. After having the COVID test at airport, we moved to our hotel as reports would come on mobile in 24 hrs. We felt the chill in wind with temp around 5° as we took the streets on foot by evening, to explore local markets at Srinagar.

Bird eye view

From woolens to wooden handicrafts, Srinagar offered a varied range of products which were reflecting the richness of cultural heritage from ages, and it we just kept on admiring and walking further till the momentous ‘Lal Chowk’. The crowd appeased the historic importance but it also pained to see the barb wires around it for security purposes.

Before proceeding to rest of the trip I must mention that perspective of state being slightly politically unstable was one of the concerns that our families had while we planned. But to put my thoughts on this in a simple line, after wandering post sunset in streets of Srinagar with my wife, I will say that I didn’t find a place a worry. Very humble Kashmiri people in the marketand my brothers in their proud worthy uniforms were standing at almost every street corner would made us feel secured

like home at all time.

Dec 26th - A four-wheel drive Scorpio is something that you would cherish when you consider drive on hills, and my tour planner knew this. This was set to be awesome from here. Mr. Parvez, the chauffeur on this vehicle necessarily needs a mentioning as I pen this experience because he ensured that we are comfortable in the vehicle, with temperature, time estimations with his experienced and safe driving skills for the next 9 days.

As we left from Srinagar hotel around 10 AM, almost an hour later he took a halt to show some barren land mentioning them as saffron farming land. At first, I was like I don’t see a plant, where is the farm? But soon got the answer that saffron farms get dried during winters due to snow in the farmland. As we stepped down from the vehicle on that land the mild aroma of saffron filled up nostrils and it confirmed that it was a saffron farm, but to view the crop I will have to visit again in summer/monsoons.

Another hour of drive and we reached another spot to regret why it’s not months of summer. Yes, it was apple valley, and the whole valley stretched in several KM’s on both side of roads offered view of barren trunks of dried apple trees. It seemed as if they would never bloom but when I interacted with a farm owner, he said that it’s the time these trees prepare themselves for the snow. They make themselves dry and shed all leaves, but will start blooming in late springs and end of summers would offer best view of trees overladen with fruits. Another reason to reason that... I have to visit again in summers.

Approximately around 1:30 PM we reached our place of stay for next two nights ‘The Hermitage by Grand Resorts’. The cherry brown colored piece of accommodation overlooking mountains with smokey clouds gave immediate chill of happiness to both of us. Before entering we were forced to click pictures of the superb view. As we entered, they offered hot ‘Kahva - a local form of green tea’ which had essence of the generations. Pahalgam has multiple places to offer soulful visual delights and you need to take different modes to cover them all.

1)  Pony ride to: Kashmir Valley, Pahalgam Valley, Dabyan, Kanimarg  and Baisaran aka Mini Switzerland.  Shouldn’t cost you more than 1200-1500 per person.

Gulzar, the 58 yr. old gentleman and his 28 yr. old son Aamir offered ride on their horses named ‘Mastana’ and ‘Raja’ to these places. The ride to these places were through narrow steeps filled with snow and being the first time, we were badly scared. But the father-son duo was phenomenal in keeping us calm and boosted through the whole trip. Indeed, we came back with imprints of unforgettable scenic beauties in our memories.

2)  Local cab to:  Betaab Valley, Chandanwari & Aru Valley. An Ecko ride would cost INR1800/- while Etios would charge INR2000/-.

A young college boy, 22yrs old ‘Iliyas’ was our chauffeur companion for ride to these places. The guy looked very sincere towards his education and said he drives cab to support household in parallel with a smiling face. We all have challenges in life, but not everyone knows to face it with smile.

Chandanwari & Aru Village would offer you the most romantic mix of snow laden hills and a river with spine chilling water flowing through them. I didn’t see any better place with such a beautiful mix elsewhere.

On the last day, Pahalgam gave us the sweetest memory of waking up to the view of first snowfall. It was slow, mild & so beautiful. The fresh snow turned everything white, turn your face to sky and feel the cotton touching you cold, it was as beautiful as your imagination of being in a wonderland.

Return the Midway - Srinagar

Dec 28th: Srinagar is the central location when you try to travel Pahalgam - Sonamarg & Gulmarg. We have 2-nights halt now at ‘Four Points by Sheraton’ and a romantic Shikara (a typical wooden boat in Dal lake) ride is on the list for today. Trust me it’s a wonderland on water. You have street vendors, eateries, chaiwaalahs etc coming down to your shikara in the mid of ride. A full-fledged floating market to shop from veggies to leather jackets in the mid of lake, where you enjoy bargain and shop.

After a ride for couple of hrs, as sun chased to set, the chill in the wind rose fiercely in the lake. Bang opposite to Dal lake is Shankaracharya temple which gets closed by 6 PM and we had to request the security officials to allow us an entry. It’s a climb of around 250 steep stairs to the temple and would take at least 25-30 mins to go up & come down. While you get blessings from Lord Shiva in the temple at top, the view from top is breathtaking as it offers a sight to whole Srinagar and full dimensions of Dal Lake.

Our day ends with a delightful dinner party at my cousin di & jiju’s place in Srinagar. It feels so warm to meet family when you are so far and at an unknown place.

Dec 29th:  Day trip to Sonamarg – I was highly excited for this day. Thajwas glacier is a place to be for adventure seekers and I wanted to go to the farthest allowed peak. Its business time for the locals and they would quote you sky high rates for manual sledges but need not pay them more than 2200-2500 per person for taking up to last hut position on the uphill. Fierce winds and extreme snow would challenge you but that’s the fun you have come for. Breathe easy and don’t strain too much, wait for breeze to slow down and move with firm steps, unless you are a professional. Visiting zero point may not be required at this time, because it may be closed due to heavy snow.

The route to and return from Sonamarg is also very beautiful. It runs through a hill and often cuts cross a territory of Jhelum river. It offers various isolated beautiful spots at the outset of road & river crossovers. If you have saved some time of daylight, do not miss visiting Chashm-e-Shahi and Mughal Gardens. Though the flowers were missing amidst heavy snow, but place is anyways worth a visit.

A walk(drive) to remember- Gulmarg

Dec 30th:

The most desired is always the least written, because you fall short on words. As I pen down experience in words, I know I am nowhere close to describe even one percent of the beauty of places visited till now but I’m still daring to word paint the Gulmarg.

Dec 30th: As the sight of National Highways toll board mentioning ‘Gulmarg’ approached, the cross-sectional view of valley with sight of milky white mountain peak seemed to sneak and welcome us. I had so many emotions running across, and was unable to express them to my wife sitting next to holding her breath admiring the awestruck view of nature.

Vaadiyon ki surkh safedi kamseen mashooqa si hai, Chinar se gire har patte ki pukaar ruhani si hai.

Khayal ik fikramand ye v hai k be-rasta mashhoq ki saansein mehroom naa ho jayein, aur inteha is baat ki hai k koi chavi nainon se aazad naa reh jaye.

Overlooking snow dripping pine trees through blind hill turns and skidding wheels on white roads, we reached ‘The Rosewood Hotel’. It’s a wooden framed decent stay with maximum open window views which was all covered with fresh snow. We didn’t plan any activity today, just wanted to explore the surreal serenity on foot. The setting sun behind the hills left the white peaks turned red as if it pulled cheeks of a cute fluffy cheeked toddler.

Next day morning we started with exploring Gondola – it’s a govt. administered two-stage high altitude cable car with Glass Cabin, which takes you to height of approx. 8500ft to Kangdori Valley in the first stage. A majority of close to 90% of tourists visit till phase 1 only as it offers a range of tourist activities at this point. You can try Snowmobile (motor snow sledge), skiing, snow cycle, manual sledge, tea coffee, maggie, snacks etc. I had a beautiful experience when the snowmobile trainer/owner allowed me to ride the vehicle on my own. My wife had trust on me and she immediately hopped on the pillion seat to make it an unforgettable experience. The trainer shot us a video of this escapade, and I have seen it hundred times already with a smile each time.

We came determined to explore phase 2 even when our guide Mr. Sharukh warned about strong wind and bad weather today at the top. Phase-2 is a steep ascend to an approx. Height of 14000ft shouldering to Affarwat peak. On the way Shahrukh also informed us that it is also claimed to be highest ferrying passenger cable car of the world.

Now this could be the nearest synonym for ‘On Top of the world’, clound-9, seventh heaven... whatever you call it. But for me the feeling at this point was way beyond.

The cold breeze on face, spotless milky earth, blue sky and sight to horizon outlining ‘The great Himalayas’, made me recite these lines:

“Agar firdaus bar roo-e zameen ast,
Hameen ast-o hameen ast-o hameen ast”

meaning ‘If there is a paradise on earth,It is this, it is this, it is this. I found my answer, felt an unmatched eternal peace and stayed there, sitting on snowcapped rocks with my wife staring perpetuity on nature. In a while when Shahrukh called up twice in top of his volume that we have to go down, weather is deteriorating, we started to walk up to the Gondola station with a topsy-turvy mix of feelings.

Next day we had ATV ride through the outlines of Gulmarg region. It was another adventure as trainers agreed to allow me drive the ATV through the cliff corners fully covered in 4-5 ft of snow. Driving through that with BAE in pillion was a sublime emotional mixture of romantic adventures. We saw the sunset through some isolated corner and were so much allured in the view that missed capturing it on cam, but thankfully the trainers shot our ride in a video and I am so obliged to them for this.

We took to foot on the ski ground where moonlight started to glitter the snowhite like pearls on ground and returned to hotel hand in hand. It was so pleasant, unforgettable and indeed ‘A walk to remember’.

Back to Base

We were returning with oceans of memories through the same road. But had no idea that the last night in Srinagar was set to be the most beautiful stay experience of the trip.

Our tour manager had arranged for a night stay at ‘The New Jacquline Heritage Houseboats in the Nigeen lake at Srinagar’. It was a picturesque fairy-tale palace. We had never seen such a beauty on water. As the owners walked us through the property, Abdul chacha – 72 yrs old care taker brought hot Kahva to us and ignited the ‘Bukhari - a local traditional space heater which has wide cylindrical fire-chamber’. It was so effective to warm the freezing atmosphere as chill was unbearable being on water. Abdul chacha cooked us delicacies which had affectional warmth of homemade food. We sat and gazed the lake through dimming lights till the chill became unbearable.

Baithata hoon jab mai kinaare aur dekhta hoon shikara, apne pyar k manjar ko bade kareeb se nihaara.

Khamosh hain vaadiyaan, sarsaraati hain fizaayein, kuch Chinaar k patton ne ab naam le kar pukaara.

Jan 3rd: It's time to return, and it's snowing. Shikara strolls us through snowfall to cross the lake. The Oar makes splash sound as it strolled towards exit, and some lines of a famous poem pictured across my thoughts :

Ae wadi shehzadi bolo kaisi ho?
Kya ab bhi wahan seher shikara karte hai?

Chaar chinar pe waqt guzara karte hain
Kya ab bhi woh jheel barf ho jaati hai?
Jispe bachche khel khilara karrte hai

Kya ab bhi tum
Sabz sunehari hoti ho
Ya garmi ki narm dopehari hoti ho
Kya ab bhi jo
Shaam ka sooraj dhalta hai
Kacche ghar ki chhat pe thehri hoti ho
Ae wadi shehzadi bolo kaisi ho?

Key Highlights

Distance: Approx. 2400 KMs (one side, from Mumbai)

Highest Point: 14000 ft approx. (shoulders to Apharwat peak)

Adventure rides:  Manual Sledge, SnowMobile/Motor-sledge, ATV ride

Places : Srinagar, Pahalgam, Sonamarg, Gulmarg.

Personal Recommendations: Shikara, Gondola phase-2, Thajwas glacier, Houseboat stay, Chandanwari, Aru Village, Snowmobiles.

A special mention is required for our soldiers holding positions at such difficult positions. It could be a travel expedition for us civilians but it’s the rock solid commitment of our defense personnel's who make this expedition peaceful for us. we felt proud and safe seeing the men in uniform at isolated locations through the valley, but also feel indebted to their commitment & sacrifice. A whole hearted salute and a warm smile is the bare minimum that we should do whenever we see these men/women in uniform.

This is Incredible India..!!

shagufta dard...

1) Jo ab tum mujhse gumnaam ho, jaanta hoon khush nahi tum v bohat pareshaan ho.
Ek baat tumhe v batana chahta hoon, apna safar kal sath ho naa ho, ye paigaam iss dil se uss dhadkan tak pahunchana chahta hoon...

K dil bhar aaye to jatana nahi aata aur
aankh bhar aaye to bahana nahi aata.
Ek khushnuma din ki yaadon ka sila rona nahi hota,
ek naasaaji bhara pal yaad kar kosna nahi hota.
Hai naasoor har lamha bekhayali ka,
jab tera chehra band aankhon se mayassar nahi hota.
Shagufta roshni v ithlati hai oonchi imaraton k paiband deewaron me,
Kya roshan karoon us Makaan ko jahan ab tera basera hi nahi hota.
Badastoor shor karti subeh jhaankti hai roshandaano se,
Bas chadar ki silvaton par Raat ki teri karwaton ka ab sath nahi hota.
Bheegi julfon se tapkati boondon ko sokha karti thi jo, ab us tolliye me teri Khushboo ka ehsaas nahi hota.

2) Kabhi aks ko pehchaan, barbas dard me muskurata hoon,
Fir Kabhi harf dar harf unki yaadein usi aks pe godata jaata hoon.

Ab to  maasoom lagti hain saja yafta salaankhon me band har diljale ki daastaan...
Jab unki mohabbat bhari saazish me bebas dil-o-jaan paata hoon.!!

3) wo raahein ab anjaan lagti hain,  Wo shaamein ab beimaan lagti hain..
Kal tak jiske aagosh me hm madhosh soo jaaya karte the,
Jaanein gum gayi kahan wo Khushboo teri saanson ki, ab to ye shmashaan ki boo bikherati hain ...

4) Sabki apni samajh, apni pehchaan hoti hai.
Koi ro k aansu me jata jaata hai,
Koi shabdon me apne gum chupa jaata hai.

4) Jab soch, samajh par haavi ho jaata hai;
Jab kash ki kashish me gubaar, khumaar ban jaata hai.
Tab aashiq junoon se takrata hai , mutasir saari kaaynaat ko kar jaata hai.
aur khauff nahi maut ka ab use, jiska mukaddar hi sifar ban jaata hai.

5) tera intejaar meri aakhiri saans v karegi,
Tu aaya to thik, warna rishta mujhse tod degi.
Aur mai chahta hoon k in saanson ki giraft se aazaadi ho jaye rooh meri,
Jinse wo Khushboo kaafir hai jo mehkaati thi meri jindagi, jab hua karti thi tu meri...

Khayal hai, koi naam nahi - full

1) kuch sadhi kuch seedhi khinchi huyi julfen, aur kajrare me sameti huyi in beintehann khubsurat aankhon k beech lalaat pe wo choti kaali si bindiya thi.
Aankhein band, aur lab lipate huye the jab dono k, tab v chamak rahi meri najaron me, wo teri bindiya thi.

2) ek saaz si thi jindagi, tum samg hm bohat muskuraye.
unmàad khumaar ka jab utra, tab sejj par thi jindagi aur tum bohat yaad aaye

3) Kabhi anjane me bhul gayi ho, us dupatte ki khusboo me dhundhate the use.
Kabhi takiye par lipati huyi us tooti julf k dhaage me dhundhate the use.
Kabhi afsaano aur kabhi ibaadat me dhundhate the use.
Jaise bin jagaye chalo gayi ho, to silvaton me dhundhate the use.

3) Kashmkash in aansuon ki kya bataun unhe,
badi shiddat se palkon k peeche khud ko samete hain.
Dehleej laangh kar aankhon se chalakna hai inhe,
Bekhauff aisa kar sakein, abhi itne khushkismat kahan ye hain.

4) bohat maasum banti thi jubaan tumhari, jinhe ibaadat ki quabuli farmaan samajh baitha tha. Ruswa kar gayi aaj har us Mohabbat ko, jo teri julfon me uljhi nigaahon se kar baitha tha.

5) Zindagi me tanhai ab soonapan kuch yunn talaash rahi hai,
k apni saanson ki aawaz v shor lagti hai,
gumnaam har kinaara aur apmaan har shaam lagti hai.

Love you Nexon .. 3000+

Monday, 12th Aug '19

Unlike a usual Monday when a morning glance on wall-clock feels like personal pestering by its needles, certain excitement didn't allow me a sound sleep and woke up at 3:30 AM.

Preparedness was needed so did pack some stuffs like:
First aid kit, Tyre air pressure gauge, torch, candle & matchbox, umbrella, minor toolkit apart from the car's one, lot of drinking water & regular water separately, some packaged food and extra clothes with bed-sheet, cash money in 4 different places, 1 extra SIM in a different mobile handset for emergencies .
+++ a galaxy of  Bollywood songs majorly lead by Kishor Kumar's :)

Finally at 4:25 AM I was all set to start for a long awaited cross capital drive and started as per plan :

Day 1 : Mumbai > Vadodara, Gujrat (small break) > Udaipur, Rajasthan.
All day drive started at 4:30 am from Powai, Mumbai and settled athotel near Govardhan Sagar Lake in Udaipr at 4:30 PM.

** due to recent floods in Gujrat, parts of NH48 was damaged so GPS guided internal state highway routes till Gujarat end and turning of Udaipur. Except for small stretches which run near city/village, road conditions were nothing to complain about but to enjoy the drive amidst cloudy weather and green farms on both sides of road. The route was a scenic delight.**

Must to pen that Udaipur - the city of lakes, welcomes with superb scenic beauty all around blended with enriched heritage of royal medieval  India in and around city. A view in evening from the window/balcony of hotel room was sufficient to pull out any exertion of road.

City Palace (Above) & Lake Pichola Palace (Below)  in Udaipur - the city of lakes.!

Day 2 : Tuesday, 13th Aug '19

kept it a lazy day to understand if I can sustain exertion on 1st day and continue the immediate next day. Also it gave me decent time to explore local heritage sites like City Palace, Fateh Sagar lake etc on the way. Plan was : Udaipur > Ajmer, Rajasthan

After leaving hotel at 9 AM and exploring city's glam destinations, I reached my stay in Ajmer at 4:30 PM. I had sufficient time &energy to strolled down a near by Ajmer Chowpatty. Clean & tidy place built around a reservoir of water treatment plant.

Ana Sagar lake Chowpatty @ Ajmer
Day 3 : Wednesday, 14th Aug '19
Plan --> Ajmer > Jaipur, Rajasthan (Small break) > New Delhi (Janakpuri W)

When you have Jaipur in your route, no one can afford to give it a miss. Woke up late so left at around 10 AM from Ajmer, but reached Hawa Mahal in Jaipur around 1:00 PM.
Spent some time admiring & alluring the wonderful sculptures of Hawa Mahal and then Jal Mahal, left from Jaipur around 3:30-4:00 PM.

Wander lust offered delight of ride till I reached Gurgaon entrance. Mild rains & bad roads through Farrukhnagar paved moon like craters on Gurgaon roads, and summoned toughest 40 KMs of drive which took me 2.5 hrs of tiring snail-pace drive to home.

Day 4 & Day 5 were to celebrate Rakshabandhan & Independence day with family in Delhi.

Day 6 : Saturday, 17th Aug '19
Plan --> New Delhi > Chandigarh > Kasauli (Himachal).

Left from Delhi at 6:30 AM and reached C'garh around 12:00 PM. Roughly 260 KMS

Peaceful highway, beautiful scenes and blissful food available in any dhaba you enter on the roadside. Parantha lovers would surely spend time at Murthal to feast upon lip smacking paranthas here.
Not to forget & mention, what a disciplined city Chandigarh is, to be appreciated or idealized. Vehicles stopping at traffic signal before zebra crossing, dedicated bi-cycle lanes and pink lanes for specially abled people certainly gives you a pleasant feeling of being in the city.
Saukhna Lake, Chandigarh
03:00 PM : With two old friends Amritpal Singh & Amanpal Singh from Chandigarh, we started uphills on Shimla Highway - NH5.
04:15 PM : Weather was worsening and started seeing heavy rainfall while moving towards Solan on the highway. Landslides at Dharampur stopped the traffic for more than an hour, and somewhere near 'Kumarhatti' we realised that it may not be a good idea to drive to Solan today considering the worsening weather. Next option was Kasauli for which we had to descend till Dharampur again and then exit towards Kasauli.
And our decision to stay back proved correct, when next day we read news of  more than 15 vehicles drowned in flood at Solan. :)
06:30 PM : Descended till Dharampur and then started on way to Kasauli.
07:45 PM : A deafening & blinding downpour mandated stopover before the Kasauli top viewpoint . We stayed in a  rusty home-stay accommodation just near by to wait till morning before plight to return. Also wanted to see the famous sunrise at Kasauli hills.
Clouds inside & outside.. en route Parwanoo-Kasauli..!!
Day 7 : Sunday, 18th Aug '19
Kasauli > Chandigarh > New Delhi

4:30 AM : Woke up with deafening sound of thundering, downpour which is unusual for us, might not be the same with locals though.
5:30 AM: Realized that the cloud cover will not allow visibility of sunrise point. We took to stall nearby locations which were all cloud covered.
Sipping at smokey tea from coal lit stoves at local Tea joints would give you joy of lifetime and an eternal peace to mind for a sure shot breeze of philosophical thoughts. Spent some silent golden time.

9:30 AM : We were back to Chandigarh at my friends place.
01:00 PM : After having delicious Chole Kulche at a local food joint where Amrit was regular, had a short visit at beautiful Sukhna Lake and started rolling back  to Delhi.
Dare not skip Garam Dharam & Choley Kulche in Punjab
7:00 PM : Reached home back in Delhi, and took to bed straight away as had to rest for return journey next day.
Day 8 : Monday, 19th Aug '19 :
Plan --> New Delhi > Udaipur (Rajasthan)

Till now I gained confidence on capacity on daily drive limits so decided to take a single night halt at Udaipur avoiding Ajmer unlike the onward trip.

5:45 AM : Started for Udaipur
4:00 PM : Reached Hotel room at Udaipur - 650 KMs
The famous Fateh Sagar lake was just behind my hotel, so spent the evening admiring beauty at the lake bay where they have also engraved paintings of  all local destinations.

Evening at Fateh sagar lake - Udaipur..
Day 9 : Tuesday, 20th Aug '19 : Udaipur > Mumbai
As its the last day, full day dedicated to spend time with my Nexon... loved the Revotorq engine capacity, turbo response and overall subtle toughness of the vehicle. I wanted to drive continuous for 4-5 hrs stopping anywhere before  lunch so will look for an early breakfast around 7:15-7:30 AM as I woke up at 6:30 AM to leave from Udaipur.

Total displacement stumped a final 0 when I reached at Powai, Mumbai safely 7:25 PM.
Dist covered today =754 KMs

I will soon plan for next trip #live to drive.

Mathematics of the trip :
Total KMs driven : 3800 KMs
Total Diesel (lts) : 198
Total no. of toll booths : 50
Total Toll paid :Rs 3290/-
Approx hrs of drive: 80

My vehicle & its footprints  on map as recorded on timeline

Finally at 4:25 AM I was all set to start for a long awaited cross capital drive.

My plan was to drive from Mumbai - Delhi, celebrate Raksha-Bandhan and Independence Day with my sister & family there, then proceed further as weather & road conditions would allow.

Preparedness was needed so did pack some stuffs like:

It started today as per plan with:
Day 1 : Mumbai > Vadodara, Gujrat (small break) > Udaipur, Rajasthan.

4:30 am : Left from my place in Powai. Took to WEH via JVLR and merges on NH48 after Dahisar. Earlier known as NH-8. Beautiful Highway till Bharuch exit and also cross exit of Surat on the way, 10:30 am : Crossed Vadodara exit - approx 400 KMs. stopped here for a break.
** due to recent floods in Gujrat, parts of NH48 was damaged so GPS guided internal state highway routes till Gujarat end and turning of Udaipur. 1:30 PM : Lunch at Modasa bypass.
2:00 PM : Gujarat ends, touched diversion with target 129 KMs to Udaipur, Rajasthan.
4:20 PM : reached my Hotel accommodation at Udaipur - 749.7 KMs

Must to pen that Udaipur - the city of lakes, welcomes with superb scenic beauty all around blended with enriched heritage of royal medieval  India in and around city. My Hotel was also one such building which offered view of beautiful lake surrounded by hills from the window/balcony. A view in evening was sufficient to pull out any exertion of road.

Day 2 : Tuesday, 13th Aug '19

kept it a lazy day to understand if I can tolerate exertion on 1st day and continue the immediate next day. Also it gave me decent time to explore local heritage sites like City Palace, Fateh Sagar lake etc on the way. Plan was : Udaipur > Ajmer, Rajasthan

09:00 AM : Left from hotel after breakfast
11:30 AM : Left from city, after seeing City Palace & lake side. Straight on NH-58.
Rajasthan offers you some incredible spectacles when you sail through the highway. Highway runs straight through the state and is well maintained. Though we would see many 2 wheeler and cattle running by on & off so driving awareness is a key to survive safe.
2:00 PM : Lunch & small break
4:30 PM : Reached hotel in Ajmer.
Had sufficient time &energy to strolled down a near by Ajmer Chowpatty. Clean & tidy place built around a reservoir of water treatment plant.

Ana Sagar lake Chowpatty @ Ajmer
Day 3 : Wednesday, 14th Aug '19
Ajmer > Jaipur, Rajasthan (Small break) > New Delhi (Janakpuri W)

9:45 AM : Left from Hotel
1:30 PM : Reached Hawa Mahal, Jaipur
2:50 PM : Jal Mahal, Jaipur
7:00 PM : Touched Gurgaon entrace.
9:30 PM : Reached home at Janakpuri.

Wander lust offered delight of ride till I reached Gurgaon entrance. mild rains & bad roads through Farrukhnagar paved moon like craters on Gurgaon roads, and summoned toughest 40 KMs of drive which took me 2.5 hrs of tiring snailpaced drive to home.

Day 4 : Thursday, 15th Aug '19
Celebrate Independence Day & Raksha-Bandhan with sister & family

Day 5 : Some casual time with family.

Day 6 : Saturday, 17th Aug '19
New Delhi > Chandigarh > Kasauli (Himachal).

06:20 AM : Left from Delhi.
12:00 PM : Reached Chandigarh. - 262 KMs.

Peaceful highway, beautiful scenes and blissful food available in any dhaba you enter on the roadside. Parantha lovers would surely spend time at Murthal to feast upon lip smacking paranthas here.
Not to forget & mention, what a disciplined city is Chandigarh, to be appreciated or idealized. Vehicles stopping at traffic signal before zebra crossing, dedicated bi-cycle lanes and pink lanes for specially abled people certainly gives you a pleasant feeling of being in the city.

Saukhna Lake, Chandigarh
03:00 PM : With two old friends Amritpal Singh & Aman from Chandigarh, we started uphills on Shimla Highway - NH5.

Amrit played a perfect local guide to help explore the place amidst bad bad weather..

9:30 AM : We were back to Chandigarh at my friends place.

01:00 PM : After having delicious Chole Kulche at a locally food joint where Amrit was regular and a short visit at beautiful Sukhna Lake, started rolling back  to Delhi.
7:00 PM : Reached home back in Delhi, and took to bed straight away as had to rest for return journey next day.

Dare not skip Garam Dharam & Choley Kulche in Punjab
Day 8 : Monday, 19th Aug '19 : New Delhi > Udaipur (Rajasthan)

I wanted to drive continuous for 4-5 hrs stopping anywhere before  lunch so will look for an early breakfast around 7:15-7:30 AM

6:00 AM : Left from hotel at Udaipur.

7:30 AM: connected on NH48 after mild breakfast.
1:45 PM : Lunch at Ankleswar (Nana Bharosa), Gujrat
7:25 PM : Reached home at Powai, Mumbai safely. 754 KMs

Stopped couple of times for tea, breakfast, lunch etc.

I will soon plan for next trip #live to drive.

Mathematics of the trip :
Total KMs driven : 3800 KMs
